Custom Cable for Lane Cove Tunnel

Due to the risk of possible accidents in the tunnel, all cable specifications in the initial tender called for Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) Sheath or 2 Hour Fire Rated cable. Madison Express (Madison Technologies) was able to manufacture a custom-made cable, designed to match UGI’s specific requirements.

The Lane Cove Tunnel in Sydney involved the construction of twin, 3.6km tunnels for the purpose of improving traffic flow. United Group Infrastructure was appointed electrical engineers for the project, responsible for the installation of all low & high voltage cables, fibre optic cables and fit out of the control centre. Madison Express’s involvement began after successfully winning the UGI tender for the supply of communications cabling.

Driven to reduce impact of traffic incidents in tunnels

The inevitability of traffic incidents in the tunnel indicated that all cable specifications in the initial tender needed to be either Low Smoke Zero Halogen Sheath or Two-Hour Fire Rated cables. In the event of fire, the use of these cables would emit minimal toxins into the atmosphere within the tunnel.

Space saving custom designed and built cable

Madison Express manufactured a custom-made cable Garland cable designed to match UGI’s specific requirements. Madison Express also facilitated the manufacture of additional Low Smoke Zero Halogen cables for the Parramatta Rail Link (another UGI project). The cables for both projects were used for CCTV cameras, emergency exit lighting, emergency telephones, traffic advisory speed signs & traffic warning signs.

Attention to detail makes deadlines easy to beat

UGI and Madison Express worked closely to make sure all systems would be covered; quantities were correct and delivery schedules were accurate to allow adequate time for installation and testing.

Delivering results within tight schedules

With tight delivery schedules nearing the end of the project, the staff at UGI and Madison Express ensured all systems remaining to be cabled were covered, quantities were correct and delivery schedules were accurate to allow adequate time for installation and testing. All the stages came together precisely and allowed UGI to complete their work two months ahead of schedule. The entire Lane Cove Tunnel project opened four months ahead of schedule.

Successful partnership leads to more success

The Lane Cove Tunnel project led to a very successful ongoing relationship between Madison Express and UGI. The custom manufactured Garland cables are now installed in major tunnel infrastructure projects throughout Australia including: Clem 7 Tunnel Brisbane, Airport Link Tunnel Brisbane, Northern Busway Brisbane and Legacy Way Tunnel Brisbane.
