Rozelle Interchange – 850km of cable for the WestConnex

WestConnex is the largest transport project in Australia, linking Sydney’s west and south-west with the city, airport and port in a 33 km continuous motorway.
The Sydney Rozelle Interchange is an underground motorway interchange and is part of Stage Two of the WestConnex road project. It forms part of an integrated plan to keep Sydney moving by easing congestion, creating jobs, and connecting communities.
The design and construct of the Rozelle Interchange & Western Harbour Tunnel Enabling Works was awarded to a joint venture Between John Holland and CPB Contractors (JHCPB). JHCPB awarded Madison Express the contract to supply optical fibre and communications cables for the Interchange.

The challenge

Stage Two of the WestConnex project was underway during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite global freight delays, component shortages and port strikes, Madison Express was able to ensure cables for the WestConnex were supplied on time and avoided any delays to the project.

Cable supply

Madison Express worked with JHCPB to devise cable solutions for the project that were on time and within budget. Cables were required to create a network for the Rozelle Interchange Operations and Maintenance Control System responsible for functions including tunnel ventilation, fire detection systems, camera for incident detection and radio rebroadcast among others. This network connects back to the WestConnex Control Centre in St Peters to remotely operate and monitor the tunnel for incidents and maintenance.
Madison Express supplied over 300km of Garland Optical Fibre cable for the tunnel and surface of the Rozelle Interchange project to create the network for the Operations and Maintenance Control System. In addition, over 200km of LEONI fire-rated instrumentation cable was supplied to monitor the status of electrical and mechanic equipment for faults, and to send signals, to remotely operate the electrical and mechanical equipment.

The results

Madison Express supplied over 850km of cable for the Rozelle Interchange Project. The cable forms part of the crucial Operations and Maintenance Control System for the Rozelle Interchange. Despite the various challenges through the pandemic, Madison Express managed supply the cables for the WestConnex on time and within budget. Madison Express’ relationship with JHCPB allowed the team to work closely together to devise the best cable solutions to meet and fulfill project requirements.
